A Facebook Lookalike Audience is a targeting feature in Facebook Ads Manager that allows advertisers to reach new people who are similar to their existing audience. Facebook uses machine learning to analyze the behavior, interests, and demographics of your source audience, then finds people who "look like" them across Facebook and Instagram.
Where is it used?
Lookalike Audiences are commonly used in:
Paid ad campaigns (e.g., conversion, traffic, lead generation)
Influencer marketing amplification (to find similar followers or fans)
Retargeting strategies
Audience expansion when scaling a high-performing campaign
E-commerce to attract customers similar to those who have purchased or engaged
When to use it?
Use Lookalike Audiences when:
You have a high-quality source audience (e.g., past buyers, email subscribers, or engaged users)
You want to scale your campaign to reach new people likely to convert
You need to target audiences similar to your influencer’s followers
You’re looking to optimize paid reach beyond cold or generic targeting
You’re launching a campaign and want a better starting audience than broad demographics
How to use it?
Go to Facebook Ads Manager
Under "Audiences," click Create Audience > Lookalike Audience
Choose a source audience: this can be a custom audience (website visitors, customer list, video viewers, etc.)
Select a location where you want to find the new audience
Set the audience size from 1% (most similar) to 10% (larger, but less similar)
Facebook automatically generates the audience based on the selected criteria
Use the Lookalike Audience in your ad sets to reach new, high-potential users
